E-Portal Blog Series: Small Charity Week – small charities, big impact

22/06/2026

This week is Small Charity Week, running from 22 to 29 June. It’s a national celebration, run by NCVO, of the vital role small charities play in communities across the UK.

If you run or volunteer for a small organisation in Essex, this one’s for you.

Small charities are the quiet engine of the voluntary and community sector. They’re the lunch club that keeps an older neighbour connected, the volunteer-run group that turns up when no one else does, the trusted face in a community that knows exactly what local people need. They tend to do an enormous amount with very little, often powered by a handful of committed people and a lot of goodwill.

That’s exactly why this week matters. Small Charity Week exists to amplify, support and connect small charities, and to start a national conversation about the difference they make. The thinking behind it is simple: when small charities are stronger, the communities they support are stronger too.

So what’s actually going on? It’s a week to celebrate the work you do, share your story, and make the most of free, ready-to-use resources. There’s also a funding boost. Through a partnership with Big Give and Global’s Make Some Noise, donations to selected small charities between 22 and 29 June are doubled. In 2025, the campaign raised £1.89m for 189 small charities in unrestricted funding. One donation, double the difference.

Whether you join in with a social post, share what your organisation has achieved this year, or simply take a moment to recognise your team and volunteers, it all adds up.

Here at the E-Portal, supporting small charities isn’t just a one-week thing. We’re here all year round with practical, plain-English guidance for organisations of every size across Essex.
